Meet the ZEA Team: VP of Operations Karen Burg

This series features all of the awesome people who make ZEA Biosciences run. Today, we sat down with Karen Burg, our energetic Project Director and Operations VP to discuss business, nutrition, and how she keeps all of our eyes on the ball.

Tell us a little about yourself, Karen

I would consider myself a driven, type A personality. I am constantly trying to better myself and those around me. I thrive on structure and planning. When I’m not keeping ZEA accountable and on-track, I can most often be found driving my kids around to their various activities or completing the never-ending “to do list.”  I enjoy exercising, healthy cooking, and spending time with family and friends. I live in Foxboro with my husband, Scott, two children Travis and Amelia, and our eleven-year-old English Bulldog, Ruby.

How did you first hear about ZEA?

ZEA was first introduced to me through my husband a few years ago when they were growing lettuce. My husband was part of a 4am workout group and became friendly with our CEO, Jim Wilson and Chief of Staff, Jake Salvatore. He would come home telling me about all the amazing things ZEA was doing. I remember thinking to myself back then I could see myself working there. It would be a good fit. And now, I’m the company’s VP of Operations. It’s interesting how life plays out.

What would you consider a highlight of your time with the company so far?

I haven’t had one specific “highlight” per say. Every day that I work for ZEA is full of its own victories and challenges. A general highlight could be always feeling energized and excited to improve and grow the business. That, along with a lot of laughs, makes my time with the company feel rewarding.

What’s something cool you’re working on now?

I am an organizer by nature. I rarely sit and relax. When I do, it is only when all my “to do” items are complete.  So, I would say the “cool” for me here is establishing the new Project Tracking tool for the organization and establishing useful Management Reporting.

Where did you go to school and what did you study?

I received my undergraduate degree from Bentley University (BS, Finance). In my 30’s while starting my family, I received my Masters in Nutrition and Holistic Health from Lesley University.

If you could plan an ideal team lunch, what would it be?

Ideal for me or ideal for the team? 😉 My choice of meal would be my current favorite dish:  Bacon Cheeseburger Salad.

What’s your favorite TV show?

Tough answer as I actually rarely watch TV.  If you catch me watching something it is most likely one of the Avenger’s movies with my kids.

What’s your favorite sports team?

Living in Foxboro, my answer should probably be the Patriots and from a professional team standpoint they are. However,  my all time favorite team to watch is my son, Travis’s club lacrosse team.

What’s something that most people don’t know about you?

I am a pretty open book and happy to talk about my life and experiences.  However, I would say that those that don’t know me well, don’t know that my husband and I adopted my daughter, Amelia, from Poland at age 4.5. We (along with our son) spent almost 10 weeks living in Poland during the adoption process back in 2016.

What’s the best way for people to follow you and see more of your work?
